Popeye is a made-up sailor from American cartoons, also called Popeye the Sailorman. He smokes a pipe, talks in a rough, funny way, and when he eats from a can his arms grow huge and he becomes very strong. The cartoon strip started in 1929. Children in many countries still know him, and people still joke that makes you strong because of him — though actually is healthy, it does not make muscles jump up in one second. The name was coined by the cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, probably from pop + eye, because of the way the character's eyes look.
