    In Australia and New Zealand, a pom is a person from Britain. It is informal, spoken, and it can hurt. In some mouths it is only teasing, the way friends poke each other; in other mouths it is meant to sting — you do not belong here. Tone and who is speaking do almost all the work. A does not call himself a pom; it is their word for him, in their place. The story behind it is a bit messy. It is a short form of . One old Australian rhyme used for immigrant, and people also joked that British skin goes -red in the sun. That use for British people is first heard around 1912. Do not mix this up with Pom as a pet name for a small Pomeranian dog — same short shape, different word — or with a drink called a pom. Those are not this sense.
