Polynesia is not one country. It is a name for a huge spread of islands in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, and the islands of French Polynesia (Tahiti is the famous one) sit in this group.

Polynesia is not one country不是一個國家。It is a name for a huge spread of islands in the central and southern Pacific Ocean而是太平洋中南部一大片島嶼的統稱。Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, and the islands of French Polynesia夏威夷、東加、薩摩亞,還有法屬玻里尼西亞的島嶼 (Tahiti is the famous one)(大溪地是其中最有名的) sit in this group都屬於這個群組。

The name was borrowed from French Polynésie, made up in 1756: poly- 'many' + a Greek word for 'island', so 'many islands'.

The name was borrowed from French Polynésie這個名字是從法文Polynésie借來的 made up in 1756是1756年造出來的字 poly- 'many'poly-是「多」的意思 + a Greek word for 'island'加上一個希臘文「島」的字 so 'many islands'合起來就是「許多島嶼」。

At first the name was used more loosely for Pacific islands in general. Later, in 1832, another scholar set the narrower use we have now — this eastern group — and left and as the other two famous Pacific island names on the map.

At first the name was used more loosely for Pacific islands in general一開始這個名字比較籠統,泛指太平洋的島嶼。Later, in 1832, another scholar set the narrower use we have now後來到了1832年,另一位學者定出了我們現在比較窄的用法 — this eastern group也就是這一片東邊的群組 and left Melanesia and Micronesia as the other two famous Pacific island names on the map並把美拉尼西亞和密克羅尼西亞留下來,成為地圖上另外兩個有名的太平洋島嶼名稱。

Though actually, those borders are a scholars' drawing, not a fence in the sea: people, languages, and boats have always crossed them. English keeps the capital P because it is a place name.

Though actually不過其實 those borders are a scholars' drawing, not a fence in the sea這些界線是學者畫出來的,不是海上真的有一道圍籬 people, languages, and boats have always crossed them人、語言和船隻一直都在跨越這些界線。English keeps the capital P英文保留大寫的P because it is a place name因為它是一個地名。
