A polka-dot is one round spot in a pattern of many round spots, most often printed on cloth for clothes. A polka-dot dress is covered with them. The spots are usually about the same size and sit in even rows. People also say polka dots for the pattern as a group, and polka-dotted as a describing word. The name took polka from the dance when that dance was a craze; the dots have nothing to do with the steps. Though actually, everyday English is a bit loose here: some people write polka dot, polka-dot, or polkadot, and they all get understood. It is a , cheerful word — more shops and fashion talk than classrooms.
組成polka (the dance) + dot (a small round mark). Named in the 1800s when the dance was in fashion, not because the pattern comes from dancing.
