A polka is a very quick, bouncing dance for two people, and also the piece of music you dance it to. The beat is usually a bright two-count, with a little hop — that hop is why the Czech name is tied to půlka, 'half,' as in a half-step. It was a huge fashion in Europe in the 1800s, and you still meet it at weddings, folk nights, and in brass-band music. People say polka for the tune even when nobody is dancing. Though actually, not every fast couple dance is a polka; this one has its own step. The round spots on cloth are a different word, — they borrowed the dance's name when the dance was wildly in fashion, not because the steps look like dots.
