A polemical piece of writing uses strong arguments to attack or to defend an idea, an opinion, or a person. It is not a calm summary. A polemical essay is written to fight: sharp, one-sided on purpose, trying to win. You meet the word in reviews, academic writing, and serious newspapers, not in everyday chat. It is related to a polemic, a fierce argument in words. Though actually students sometimes hear the first part and think political; a polemical text may be about , but the word itself means the fighting style, not the subject.
