One way to hold this word: a machine that hands you the finished picture while you are still standing there. You press the button, a small sheet slides out, and the picture slowly appears in your hand. Everything else in the word grows around that moment — the little print itself, and the act of making one. The name behind it all began on a piece of light-filtering plastic made by the same company.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary records polaroid as a genericization of the trademark Polaroid, owned by Polaroid Corporation. The same trademark sits on the polarizing plastic and on the instant camera, which is why one word covers both.
