    Poland is a country in the middle of Europe, with Germany on its west and on its east. Warsaw is the capital. About 38 million people live there. After the Second World War it was a Communist country, and the old Soviet Union had a strong hold on its government. In 1980 a workers' movement called Solidarity, led by Lech Walesa, began to push back; in 1989 Solidarity became the party in power. English puts the stress on the first part: PO-land. Though actually people mix the set of names: the country is Poland, a person is a Pole, and the language and adjective are Polish.
