A podiatrist is a doctor whose work is feet. They treat sore heels, nails that grow into the skin, painful bumps on the side of the big toe, trouble with walking, and some illnesses that show up in the feet, such as problems from diabetes. In the United States this is a normal job title with its own training. In Britain you may still hear the older word for someone who looks after feet, though podiatrist is used there too. This is not a bone doctor for the whole body, and it is not a salon person who only paints nails — though some of the day-to-day work can look simple. You go to a podiatrist when the problem is medical.
