If something is pockmarked, its surface is covered with little hollows. You can say it of a face with many old scars, and you can say it of a landscape, a wall, or a road full of pits. It is a describing word, and it often carries a slightly damaged feeling — not just has holes, but has been left marked. Though actually, writers use it quite freely for any pitted surface, even when no illness was involved: a pockmarked battlefield, a pockmarked moon. It is a little more vivid, and a little less kind, than saying scarred.
