A pockmark is a small hollow left on a surface. On skin, it is the little dip that stays after a spot has healed — the kind you can feel with a fingertip. Old diseases like smallpox left many of these, which is why faces were once described this way; today people still use it for acne scars, though scar is the more everyday word for one mark. The same word is used for things that are not skin at all: a wall, a road, a field, even the moon.
