Pluralism is two close things. First, a society where many kinds of people live together — different , religions, political beliefs — and the differences are allowed to stay, rather than one group forcing everyone into the same mould. Second, the belief that this is a good way to live, and that it can work. You hear it in , in talk about society, and in religion (the idea that more than one faith can share a country, or even that more than one path can be true). It is a formal, essay-and-news word, not a kitchen-table word. Though actually, people sometimes use it a bit loosely for any mix of views, even in a small office; the home meaning is a whole society, or the idea behind that society. Taiwan already talks a lot about being 多元; this is the English name for that idea as a system or a belief, not just “many kinds.”
