If you look or speak pleadingly, you are asking for something with feeling — you very much want the other person to say yes, and it shows in your voice or your face. A child might look up pleadingly for one more story; an adult might say someone’s name pleadingly when they want to be believed or forgiven. It belongs with plead (to ask in a serious, almost begging way). It is a little literary or story-like: you meet it in novels and in careful description more than in everyday chat, where people might just say ‘please’ or ‘he begged me’. It is not the courtroom word pleading (the papers a lawyer files), even though they sit in the same family. The tone can be sweet or a bit desperate, depending on the scene.
