A playmate is a friend that a child plays with — the kid next door, a cousin, someone at the park. It is a warm, slightly old-fashioned word; many families now just say friend. Adults do not usually call each other playmates. Though actually, there is a very different use on magazine covers: a Playboy Playmate is a woman photographed for that magazine. Same spelling, different world, and easy to mix up.
