Plating is a thin layer of metal laid over another metal. A cheap spoon might have silver plating: it looks silver on the outside, but a different metal sits underneath. People plate things to make them look better, last longer, or keep from rusting — gold plating on jewellery, chrome plating on a car part. In factories this is often done with electricity, which is why you also hear . The word is plate plus -ing: you are covering something as if with a thin plate of metal. Older English already had a word like this for a thin piece of metal. Though actually, cooks also say plating when they arrange food on a dish, but that is a different use; here it is the metal coat.
