Plasticine is a soft stuff, a bit like clay, that children press and roll into shapes — animals, food, little people. It comes in many bright colours, and unlike wet earth clay it does not dry out and crack, so you can use it again and again. Though actually, Plasticine began as a brand name: an art teacher in Bath, in the UK, made it in 1899, from plastic plus a material ending, -ine. In British English the brand name slowly became an ordinary word for this kind of modelling stuff, the way some people use a famous tissue name for any tissue. In American English children are more likely to say Play-Doh, which is a different product — softer, and it dries. Teachers and shops still often keep the capital P because of the brand, but you will also see it in lower case when people mean the material in general.
