Plangency is the quality of a sound that is loud and deep and sad — the ringing of a heavy bell that does not die quickly, or a voice that sounds as if it is mourning. The word names that feeling in the sound, not a thing you can hold. It is rare, English. You will meet it in writing about music or poetry. In speech, people just say a deep, sad sound.
