A plainspoken neighbour might tell you the soup needs salt; a plainspoken boss might say the plan will not work. It can feel blunt, and some listeners still bristle — though actually the word itself praises the honesty more than it scolds the manners. It is a fairly ordinary adjective, a little old-fashioned in tone, more at home in stories and character talk than in very formal writing.
