Placatory is the adjective from placate. It describes words, a tone, a gesture, or a letter whose purpose is to make an angry person calm down. A placatory smile, a placatory email, a placatory tone of voice. Notice what it describes: it attaches to the thing you say or do, not to the person's feelings and usually not to the person either. You can call someone placatory, but even then you mean their manner is — that they are being soft and agreeable in order to avoid a fight. This is a genuinely formal word, more so than placate itself. It lives in journalism, business writing, and books; you could go years in Taiwan without hearing it spoken aloud. It also carries a slight tilt of judgement. Calling a politician's speech placatory suggests the speech was designed to soothe rather than to answer — soft on the surface, empty underneath. When people mean the same thing warmly, they usually say 'gentle' or 'apologetic' instead. There is a near-twin, `conciliatory`, which is far more common and much more positive: conciliatory means genuinely trying to make peace between two sides, while placatory leans towards keeping one angry side quiet.
