Pittsburgh is a city in the US state of Pennsylvania. It grew famous as a steel city — mills, rivers, bridges, smoke — and that old industry is still the first picture many people have, even though the city has changed and is less “all steel” than it used to be. People who know it often call it Pitt. The name comes from William Pitt the Elder, a British leader, plus -, an old piece meaning a fortified town, the same kind of ending you hear in Edinburgh. It sits where rivers meet, and the bridges are part of how the city looks.
