When something is pitiable, it makes you feel pity: you feel sorry, and you wish things were better for that person, animal, or situation. You might talk about a pitiable condition (a sad, hard state) or a pitiable attempt (so weak it almost hurts to watch). That second use is a little sharper — you feel sorry, but you may also be judging, as if the thing is not just sad but poor or small. The word is a bit formal. In everyday talk, people often say pitiful, or just sad. Though actually, pitiful can sound harsher, more like “this is sadly bad,” while pitiable still keeps a clearer door open to real sympathy.
