In baseball, a pitchout is when the pitcher throws the ball well out to the side on purpose, too far for the batter to hit. The catcher can then throw to a base and try to catch a runner who is stealing. It is a planned throw, not a mistake. Commentators and coaches use it; outside baseball it is rare. Though actually, it can look a bit like a wild pitch, but a wild pitch is an accident. A pitchout is called for. (American football also has a pitchout — a toss out to the side — but this entry is the baseball one.)
