A pitched roof slants down. It is not flat. Rain and snow can slide off it. A pitched roof rises sharply, like a triangle; a low-pitched roof slants only a little. Builders, architects, and people selling houses use this word a lot. Though actually, many roofs that slant are still called pitched — even a hipped roof, which slants on all sides — so the useful contrast here is versus flat, not one special shape. You can also hear the pitch of a roof as a number, how steep it is. Do not mix this with a high-pitched voice, which is about sound, or with pitched as the past of pitch (to throw a ball, or to put up a tent).
