Pitchblende is a dark, shiny stuff dug out of the earth. It looks a little like hard tar, which is why pitch is in the name. From pitchblende, scientists get uranium, and from that they later got radium too. It is famous because Marie Curie spent years working with it when she was looking for radium. You will see this word in science class or in history about those early discoveries, not in daily talk. Though actually, scientists now often use a tidier name for the mineral; pitchblende is the old name people still use for this dark, tar-like kind. It is the rock, not the metals taken from it.
