A pinwheel is a child’s toy on a stick. At the end there is a little wheel of curved vanes — plastic, paper, or foil. When you blow, or when the wind catches it, the wheel spins. The pin is the small rod through the middle; the wheel is what turns. Children hold them at festivals and stick them in gardens. People stretch the word: a that spins on a nail is a pinwheel; someone who falls and turns over in the air may pinwheel down; a pastry rolled into a spiral is a pinwheel too. The toy is the home meaning. The others borrow its picture of something spinning round a centre.
