Etymonline: pilot first meant 'one who steers a ship' (via French pillote, Italian piloto, from Medieval Greek pedotes 'rudder, helmsman'), broadened to 'a guide, a director' by the 1590s, reached balloons by 1848 and aeroplanes by 1907; the 'serving as a prototype' adjective is from 1928 and the TV 'pilot episode' noun from 1962.
