A pillowcase is the cloth cover you pull over a pillow so the pillow stays clean and you have a nice surface to rest your head on. You wash the pillowcase often; you wash the pillow itself much less. It is an everyday home word, the same in British and American English. Some older British speakers also say pillow slip, but pillowcase is the usual word now. The “case” here is simply a covering, not a box and not a story in court.
