A pilgrim is a person who travels a long way, for religion, to a holy place — a shrine, a temple, a city that matters in their faith. Muslims going to , Christians going to Jerusalem or , and temple walkers on a long route: English pilgrim covers that religious . It is a serious, ordinary word, not slang. Though actually, with a capital P, the Pilgrims in American history books are a specific group of English (the people). That is a name. A small-p pilgrim is any holy-place . There is a verb to pilgrim, but you will almost always meet the noun.

組成From Middle English pilegrim, from Old English pilegrīm, from Old French pelegrin, from Latin peregrīnus (“foreigner, from abroad”). English peregrine is the same Latin word that kept both r sounds. The l in pilgrim happened because early Romance disliked two r sounds close together; Italian pellegrino shows the same change.
