A piffling amount is so small that it is almost useless — not worth getting about, and sometimes not worth having. A piffling pay rise, a piffling fine, a piffling number of votes. The word is : you are saying that is nothing, really. It comes from piffle, “nonsense”; the idea is that the amount is so small it feels like a joke. Though actually it is about size and worth, not about whether someone is talking nonsense. A piffling sum can still be quite real money to a student, which is why the word can sound a bit snobbish in the mouth of a rich person.
