Piety is the way you act when you take your religion seriously: you show respect, you keep the practices, you try to live as if the holy things matter. A pious person shows piety. Though actually the old Latin word behind it, pietas, was wider than church — it also meant duty to your family and your country. English kept a piece of that in the phrase piety, which is exactly the 孝 students here already know: respect and care for your parents. That phrase is how many first meet the word. Careful: piety can also be used with a little bite, when someone is putting on a holy face. And piety is not pity. They look like cousins on the page, and they truly come from the same Latin word, but pity is feeling sorry for someone; piety is religious respect, or, in piety, family duty.
