Pierrot is a character from old French pantomime: a sad young man with a white-painted face, loose white clothes, and a stiff round collar that sticks out like a plate. He is the dreamy, one — often in love with a girl who loves someone else. You will see him in old pictures, in later poems and ballets, and sometimes as a carnival costume. He is not just “a clown” in the circus sense; he is a specific white-faced figure with a name and a mood. The name is a French pet form of Pierre, “little Peter”.
