1. 1

Pierre is the capital city of South Dakota, a state in the middle of the United States. It is a small city — one of the smallest state capitals in the country — on the Missouri River. The spelling is French because the place was named after a French-American trader, Pierre Chouteau, and Pierre is the French form of the name Peter. Though actually, Americans do not say it the French way. They call the city “Peer”, as if it rhymed with ear. If you say it like the French name Pierre, people may not catch which place you mean.
