A piazza is a large open square in a town or city, with buildings around it, where people meet, sit, and walk. English took the word from Italian, so we use it most when we talk about Italy — a wide stone square, cafés, evening talk. You can call any such space a square; piazza sounds a little more Italian and a little more special. Though actually, in older British English, piazza could also mean a covered walk along the side of a building. That use is rare now. The everyday meaning you will meet is the open town square.
