From Greek ta physika, literally 'the natural things', from physis 'nature'. It came into English around 1580 covering natural science broadly, and narrowed to matter and energy around 1715.
來自希臘文 ta physika，字面就是「自然的那些東西」，字根 physis 是「自然」。這個字大約 1580 年進入英文時，泛指所有自然科學，到 1715 年前後才縮小成今天以物質和能量為主的範圍。難怪它管的東西看起來那麼雜：光、熱、力、運動，本來就是「自然界的事」這一整包。
