Photovoltaic describes technology that turns light — usually sunlight — directly into electricity. This is how solar panels work. It's mostly a technical or scientific word: 'photovoltaic cell,' 'photovoltaic panel.' In everyday talk, people usually just say 'solar panel' instead.
