When a plant photosynthesizes, it carries out photosynthesis: it uses sunlight, , water, and carbon dioxide to make sugars it can live on, and it gives off oxygen. We usually say “plants photosynthesize” in science class. Algae and some bacteria photosynthesize too. Same idea as the noun photosynthesis, just the action. It is a biology verb; you will not hear it in ordinary chat.
