A Photostat is an old kind of , or the machine that made one. Before Xerox-type copiers took over in the 1960s and 1970s, offices used Photostat machines: they made a photographic copy of a page. People also used it as a verb: to Photostat a document meant to copy it on that machine. The name began as a brand, then people used it for the copies themselves — the way some people later said “Xerox” for any . Though actually, almost nobody uses a Photostat machine now. If you meet the word, it is usually in an old letter, a history book, or a description of old office equipment. Today we just say .
