Photojournalism is reporting the news mainly with photographs, not mainly with long articles. The pictures are the story: a war, a protest, a flood, a quiet moment after a match. The photographer is doing a journalist’s job — going to the place, choosing what to show, and publishing it so other people can see what happened. It is not the same as taking pretty photos for art, and it is not the same as a news piece that merely has a photo beside it. The word lives in media, universities, and prize lists; it feels serious. There is an old argument about whether the photos should be posed or caught as they happen; good photojournalism is supposed to show what was really there, though the person behind the camera still chooses the frame.
