A Photofit is a picture of a face built from photographs of separate parts — eyes from one person, a nose from another, hair from a third — so the police can show what someone might look like. Witnesses sit with an officer and choose pieces until the face feels right. It is not a real photograph of the criminal, and it is not a drawing from nothing, though people loosely call any police face picture a Photofit. The name started as a British police system: photo plus fit, because the pieces are fitted together. In the US a similar older tool was Identikit, which used drawings; today most forces use computers, but the old word still appears in British news. You often write Photofit with a capital P when you mean that system.
