Photocopying is making a paper copy of a page with a machine that uses light. You put the paper on the glass, press a button, and a new page comes out that looks the same. In offices and schools this is everyday work: a test, a contract, a map. People also use it as the -ing form of the verb: I am photocopying these notes. The result is not a photograph you hang on a wall — though the machine does use a kind of light-and-image process. It is a working copy, often black and white, sometimes colour. In careful English the verb is photocopy and the activity is photocopying; in speech people often just say copy. Older English speakers sometimes say xeroxing, from the old brand Xerox, but that is a brand name used as a verb.
