A faint, steady glow that you only really notice in the dark. The messy bit scientists care about: this is not the same as fluorescence. Fluorescence is a glow that mostly stops when you take the light away; phosphorescence keeps glowing for a while after, like those star stickers on a bedroom ceiling. Sea water and some animals can show it too. Though actually, everyday speakers use the word loosely for any ghostly glow in the dark. And another twist: the element can glow, but that famous glow is a chemical reaction with air, not true phosphorescence — even though the words look like family.
