This is the usual American spelling of phoney. It means fake — not real, not honest. You can call a story phony, a smile phony, or cheap goods phony. As a noun, a phony is a fake person or a fake thing: someone putting on an act. It is informal and a bit sharp. British writing still likes phoney, though people say both and mean the same word. Though actually, nobody is measuring how fake something is; it is a feeling word: this does not ring true. Crime stories and older American slang love it; younger people still use it, often for online acts and feelings that seem put on.
