Phonological is the adjective for . It talks about the sound system of a language, or about the study of that system — not about the physical noise in the air. A phonological rule is a pattern the language follows, like “this sound changes when it sits next to that one,” or “this cluster of sounds may end a word but may not start one.” Though actually, students often reach for phonological when they mean phonetic. Phonetic is about the real sound in the mouth and the air. Phonological is about which sounds the language treats as different, and how they are allowed to sit together. Two sounds can be phonetically a little different and still be phonologically “the same” in that language — English speakers do this with the p in pin and spin. This is a formal, academic word. You will meet it in , speech therapy, and sometimes in serious language-teaching writing, not in the street.
