Philly is an informal, friendly short name for Philadelphia, a large city in the eastern United States, in Pennsylvania. Locals and other Americans say it the way you might use a city’s nickname rather than the full official name: ‘I’m from Philly,’ ‘a Philly accent.’ You also hear it in food: a Philly cheesesteak is the city’s famous steak sandwich. It is casual. On an envelope, in a news headline, or in a school atlas you still write Philadelphia. It is not a different place; it is the same city in everyday clothes.
