Philadelphia is a large city in the US state of Pennsylvania. People who live there, and many other Americans, just call it Philly. It sits on a river and grew as a port; factories and banks still matter, though the old heavy industry is not what it once was.

Philadelphia is Philadelphia 是 in the US state of Pennsylvania美國賓州的 a large city一座大城市。 People who live there住在那裡的人, and many other Americans和許多其他美國人, just call it都直接叫它 Philly。 It它 sits on a river臨河而立, and grew as a port靠著當港口長大; factories and banks工廠和銀行 still matter仍然重要, though不過 the old heavy industry老一輩的重工業 is not what it once was已不如當年。

In 1776, leaders met there and signed the Declaration of Independence — the paper that said the American colonies would no longer belong to Britain. often say it was the first capital of the new United States. That is the tidy story: the city was the heart of the new country for years, and the government did sit there for a time. Though actually, under the Constitution the capital was New York first, then Philadelphia, and later they built Washington, D.C.

In 1776在1776年, leaders領袖們 met there在那裡集會, and signed簽下了 the Declaration of Independence獨立宣言 — the paper that said那張紙上說: the American colonies美洲殖民地 would no longer belong to Britain將不再屬於英國。 Schoolbooks教科書 often say常說 it它 was是 of the new United States新生美國的 the first capital第一個首都。 That is the tidy story那是整理得乾淨的版本: the city這座城 for years有好些年 was是 of the new country新國家的 the heart心臟, and the government而政府 did sit there確實在那裡待過 for a time一段時間。 Though actually不過其實, under the Constitution在憲法之下, the capital首都 first最先 was New York是紐約, then Philadelphia然後才輪到這座城, and later後來 they他們 built蓋了 Washington, D.C. 華盛頓特區。

Dictionaries still sometimes call it the fifth-largest US city; Phoenix has since grown past it, so it is around sixth now. The name is Greek and means something like “ love,” which is why you also hear “the City of Love.”

組成From Latin Philadelphia, from Ancient Greek Philadélpheia, from philádelphos (“brother/sibling-loving”) + -eia (a place-name ending). philádelphos is from philein “to love” + adelphos “brother, sibling.” The name was used for cities in the ancient world first (in what is now Turkey and Jordan). The American city was given the same name on purpose, to mean brotherly love.
