A philatelist is a person who collects stamps for pleasure. That is the whole job of the word: it names the collector, not the hobby and not the adjective. The hobby is ; things to do with the hobby are philatelic. It is a formal, inside-the-hobby word — stamp people and dictionaries use it; a child with a first album is more often just called a stamp collector. There is no extra meaning hiding here, and it is not about charity.
