A phial is a small bottle, usually glass, for a little liquid — medicine, perfume, or, in stories, a potion. It is the older or more twin of vial: same thing, different spelling. You will meet phial in older books and fantasy; a nurse or today is more likely to say vial. It is not a common spoken word any more, and it has nothing to do with a file of papers or a computer file, even though it can look that way on the page.

組成From Greek phiálē, a wide shallow bowl, through Latin phiala and French fiole. The same history gives English vial — two spellings of one word. The verb, rare, just means to put something into a phial.
