In English, we mostly meet it in math and science, where it stands for special numbers or angles — for example, the 'golden ratio' is often called phi. You'll also see it in the names of university honor societies and fraternities/sororities, like Phi Beta Kappa, because Greek letters are traditionally used for those club names.
