A pheromone is a chemical a body makes and sends out — often without anyone meaning to — that can change what another animal of the same kind does: finding a mate, following a trail, gathering, warning. Insects are the clear case (ants, moths). For people, scientists still argue about how much it matters; popular talk is often surer than the evidence. It is not the same thing as a hormone: a hormone works inside one body; a pheromone is carried out, to affect someone else. Perfume ads like to borrow the word. Treat those claims gently.
