A hormone is a chemical your own body makes, then sends through the blood to tell another part of the body what to do. It can tell you to grow, to sleep, to feel hungry, to make a baby, or to speed up when you are scared. You cannot see it, and you do not choose it — it just happens inside you. People talk about hormones a lot around teenagers, because those years really do bring big changes, though actually every age has hormones working all the time: children, adults, older people. Doctors also give hormone medicine when the body is not making enough, or to treat some illnesses. In everyday talk people sometimes blame “hormones” for a bad mood; that can be a bit loose, but the idea underneath is real — these chemicals do colour how we feel.
組成Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ὁρμῶν (hormôn), the “-ing” form of ὁρμάω (hormáō, “to set in motion, to urge on”), from ὁρμή (hormḗ, “a rush forward, an impulse”). Scientists needed a name for a chemical that sets the body going, and they took this Greek word.
